The popular erectile dysfunction drug Cialis has been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of men with erectile dysfunction, the company said Thursday.
"Cialis has never been approved for use in the U. S., but we are very pleased to continue to market this medication and will bring the same level of effectiveness to patients as we had in 2003," Eli Lilly and Icos spokesman Paul D. Anderson said in a company news release.
The drug's brand name is tadalafil, which is similar to the popular erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra.
"Cialis is a popular treatment option for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, with millions of men seeking treatment," said Dr. Albert Bourla, a urologist and chairman of the board of American Urological Association.
"Our primary objective in treating erectile dysfunction is to restore erectile function in men who have not responded to other therapies and who are experiencing significant distress related to impotence," said Dr. Albert Bourla, chairman of the board of American Urological Association.
"The drug's ability to increase blood flow and improve erectile function will enable men to achieve and maintain erections," Anderson said. "Our hope is that this treatment will be of some help to many of these patients."
Patients who have experienced erectile dysfunction in the past or who are currently taking other ED medications may still be eligible, but the FDA requires that the drug be prescribed in a stable dose and be taken only as needed, not every day.
Cialis was developed by Eli Lilly and Icos in 2003 and is available in 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg and 40 mg tablets in various strengths, Anderson said.
The active ingredient in Cialis is tadalafil, a generic version of the brand name Cialis.
Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Viagra.
Eli Lilly and Icos, based in Indianapolis, said that Cialis is not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and that Cialis is not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The FDA has not approved Cialis for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"In fact, the only other approved treatment of erectile dysfunction is for benign prostatic hyperplasia," Anderson said.
Bourla said that Lilly and Icos had been testing Cialis for four years and that it is now approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Cialis is now approved to treat patients who have had surgery to the prostate or to the rectum or whose prostate gland is enlarged. It is also not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"If you had erectile dysfunction in 2003, you should not use Cialis for treatment of your penis for longer than four months, even after your prostate is enlarged," Anderson said.
Cialis is available in various strengths and is usually taken once daily.
Patients who have experienced erectile dysfunction in the past may still be eligible, but the FDA requires that the drug be prescribed in a stable dose and be taken only as needed, not every day.
Anderson said that Cialis is not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"Eli Lilly and I are very pleased to have received FDA approval for the treatment of erectile dysfunction," he said.
He said Lilly is working on further testing of Cialis and that the FDA will need to approve it later this year.
